About Rainbow

Rainbow is building the next generation of commercial insurance.

We combine technology, data and thoughtful product design to make commercial insurance simpler for independent agents and the small businesses they serve.

In just four years, Rainbow has grown into one of the leading insurers of restaurants in the U.S., competing with some of the largest and most established carriers in the industry. We’ve done that with a team of just over 50 people, and we’re approaching profitability while continuing to expand into new products, programs and markets.

We’re still early enough that there is a lot left to build, but established enough to have real scale, customers and momentum.

About the Product team

Product works at the intersection of Engineering, Underwriting, Sales, Service and Claims.

Our Engineering, Product and Design organization is roughly 15 people, so Product Managers at Rainbow operate with significant scope and autonomy. You’ll work directly with senior leaders and domain experts, spend time with agents and internal teams, and stay closely involved from discovery through implementation and iteration.

This is our first Product Manager hire. You’ll report to the VP, Product & Design and play an important role in shaping how Product operates as the company grows.

This role is ideal for someone who enjoys solving technically complex product problems and wants to grow into broader product ownership over time. You'll start by owning execution across a portfolio of initiatives while building deep domain knowledge in commercial insurance.

What you'll do

  • Own product initiatives end-to-end: identify what is worth solving, investigate the underlying data and workflows, test potential approaches, turn that learning into workable solutions, launch, measure and iterate.
  • Develop a deep understanding of Rainbow's products, underwriting model, agent workflows and operational processes.
  • Develop a strong working understanding of Rainbow's codebase, database and data model so you can investigate problems independently and collaborate deeply with Engineering.
  • Conduct continuous product discovery with agents, brokers, distribution partners and internal teams to understand how people work, where they experience friction and where the greatest opportunities exist.
  • Use SQL and other analytical tools to investigate product and operational problems, validate hypotheses, understand system behaviour and measure outcomes.
  • Write clear, thoughtful product requirements that define workflows, business rules, edge cases, validation behaviour, acceptance criteria and operational impacts.
  • Partner closely with Engineering throughout solution design and implementation, balancing customer needs, business priorities, technical constraints and long-term platform flexibility.
  • Collaborate with external UX Design partners to create intuitive, consistent and scalable product experiences.
  • Coordinate cross-functionally with Underwriting, Sales, Service and Claims to ensure product decisions reflect business needs, regulatory requirements and operational realities.
  • After launch, gather feedback, measure results and use what we learn to guide the next iteration.
  • Own hands-on technical work from day one, including building prototypes or interim solutions and taking on discrete, well-scoped engineering tasks where appropriate.

Skills you bring

  • Product management experience is preferred, but we are also excited about candidates moving into Product from software engineering or another highly technical role.
  • Strong quantitative and analytical skills. You're comfortable using data to investigate problems, validate hypotheses and measure outcomes.
  • Strong SQL skills are required. You should be comfortable querying relational databases independently to investigate product questions and understand how data is structured.
  • Excellent written communication. You can translate ambiguity into clear product requirements, decision documents and implementation guidance.
  • Strong product judgement and an ability to balance customer needs, business priorities, technical constraints and operational realities.
  • Experience conducting customer interviews or other forms of product discovery and translating those insights into shipped product.
  • A strong software engineering foundation is required: either a degree in Software Engineering, Computer Science or a closely related field, or professional experience working as a software developer.
  • You are comfortable reading code, understanding APIs and data flows, debugging issues with engineers, and making small code changes or building lightweight technical solutions when useful.
  • Strong UX instincts. You don't need to be a designer, but you care deeply about usability, consistency and thoughtful workflow design.
  • Experience building B2B software, workflow-heavy products, internal tools, fintech, insurtech or other complex operational systems is an asset.

Who you are

  • You are intellectually curious and enjoy understanding how businesses, systems and people work.
  • You are analytical without losing sight of the people behind the data.
  • You are an excellent listener. You seek to understand before forming opinions and build trust with people from a wide range of backgrounds and disciplines.
  • You communicate with empathy and clarity. Whether you're interviewing an agent, discussing trade-offs with Engineering or presenting to leadership, people leave conversations feeling heard and informed.
  • You have strong opinions, loosely held. You're comfortable advocating for an idea, incorporating new information and supporting the team's decision.
  • You enjoy collaboration. You believe the best products are built by diverse teams working through problems together.
  • You think in systems. You naturally look beyond individual feature requests to identify reusable patterns, operational improvements and long-term opportunities.
  • You like getting close to the implementation. You are not looking to hand requirements over the wall; you enjoy digging into how systems actually work and using your technical skills to move a problem forward.
  • You care about craftsmanship. Clear writing, thoughtful product requirements and intuitive user experiences matter to you.
  • You enjoy shipping, learning and improving. You know that great products are built through thoughtful iteration rather than endless debate.

Why Rainbow?

This is an opportunity to join Product at an unusually formative moment.

You'll be the first Technical Product Manager hired into a growing Product organization and will help shape not only the products we build, but the Product function itself. You'll work directly with experienced leaders across Product, Engineering and the business, own meaningful product decisions, stay close to the technical implementation, and see the impact of your work quickly.

If you enjoy solving difficult problems, working with smart, humble teammates and building products that customers genuinely love, we'd love to hear from you.

Compensation & benefits

  • Base salary of $180,000 - $200,000.
  • Meaningful equity in a fast-growing company.
  • Competitive benefits including medical, dental, vision, life, disability, 401(k) and more.
  • Flexible PTO with no annual cap.

This is a hybrid role based in San Francisco. We work together in person on Mondays and Thursdays from our WeWork office at 650 California Street in Chinatown.
